Zelden is een Nederlandse architect bepalender geweest voor het beeld van zijn tijd dan de Roermondse architect Pierre Cuypers (1827-1921). Cuypers heeft met zijn honderden gebouwen niet alleen een kwantitatief stempel gedrukt op de gebouwde omgeving in Nederland, hij heeft ook de kwaliteit van de Nederlandse architectuur verhoogd en een model voor het moderne architectenbureau ontwikkeld.

Van den Broek is een van de meest gerespecteerde Nederlandse architecten van de twintigste eeuw, maar tegelijkertijd een van de minst bekende. Men kent Van den Broek met name van zijn samenwerking met Jaap Bakema, die van 1948 tot en met 1978 duurde.
